The Road Fit scheme is provided by Red One on behalf of Devon County Council for any driver who has a health issue that may make driving more difficult or who is returning to driving after an operation or health episode.
The scheme enables you to take a short-assessed drive with one of our approved driver trainers. You will be given advice about your driving performance and a written report at the end of your assessment. Your doctor will be sent a copy of this report. This will help you and your doctor to decide the best course of action to take to reduce the chance of problems occurring when you are behind the wheel.
PLEASE NOTE: To undertake a Road Fit assessment you will need a current valid driving licence.
If you have a medical condition which the DVLA must be notified of you will also need to have done this and received their OK to continue to drive before we can book an assessment
How to Book:
- We require a written referral, either posted or emailed, from your GP (or other medical professional). We cannot accept a self referral or family member referral.
- Once we have received the referral, we will post out a letter with a booking form that will need to be completed and returned to us.
- When the completed form and payment of £55.00 has been received back at the office, we will contact a local instructor and ask him to give you a call to arrange a suitable time for the assessment.
The assessment will usually take place from your home address and in your own vehicle so that you feel more comfortable.
Your observed drive will be up to 45 minutes in duration and you will normally be asked to drive the roads and routes you usually use. At the end of the drive your instructor will talk you through points of your driving that seemed good and any that gave concern. You may be given some tips about how to make yourself safer including, if appropriate, more driving sessions.
