Course overview

This course is made up of 40 Guided Learning Hours, including 10 hours of e-learning and 6 hours of portfolio completion.

It is designed to ensure that the successful student is safe, competent and adequately experienced to deal with fires on-board vessels of all sizes when they complete the course.

The course also provides to ability for students to apply their skills and knowledge in vessels located alongside in ports, in estuarial waters and on inland waterways.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for personnel who may have a role in dealing with a fire on board a ship or vessel which may be alongside, at sea or on other waterways. This could include individuals who form part of a specialist fire fighting team from a Local Authority Fire & Rescue Service, employees engaged as crew on a vessel with fire fighting responsibilities or volunteers such as lifeboat crew at marine events or locations.  

Course requirements

  • The delegates are required to be competent fire fighters.
  • Medically fit for operational duties in accordance with Fire Service standards
  • Delegates must attend with full fire kit conforming to current standards
  • Be able to use Microsoft Office or equivalent office suite

Course content

The qualification comprises of 3 units including:

Unit 1: Legislation and guidance relating to maritime fire fighting.

Unit 2: Principles and procedures for maritime fire fighting.

Unit 3: Application of maritime fire fighting techniques.

Assessment & certification

There is a pre-course e-learning assessment and the candidate is required to prepare a case study to present to the group to encourage learning through professional discussion.

This is a 3 day course which will require the delegate to write a portfolio. Student support will be provided by an evening instructor if required. There will be a practical assessment.

3 days – 08:00 – 18:00 daily + 10 hours e-learning (courses may run later and some evening study is required)
