Maritime School: STCW Basic Safety Week

View School Calendar

Course Overview

Approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, this ‘open enrolment’ 5 day course is essential for any individual aiming to work at sea on a vessel over 24 metres. Under the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code, it is a requirement for anyone working at sea on commercial vessels or super-yachts to hold the STCW certificate.

The STCW course is made up of five elements, which give delegates an understanding in firefighting and use of firefighting equipment; reacting to emergency situations and evacuation procedures; sea survival and safety at sea; and first aid knowledge.
The students will be given tutorials followed by guided and supervised practical exercises on board a steel ship structure to provide greater realism to the course – this is one of only a few structures in the UK recognised by the MCA as suitable for training.
