Maritime School: STCW Personal Sea Survival Techniques

Course Overview

Approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency this ‘Open enrolment’ course is designed to meet the requirements laid down in STCW95 Regulation VI/1 and Section A-VI/1 Paragraph 2.1.1. of the STCW Code and element 6.4 of unit M6 of the Marine VQ’s.

The student will attend a tutorial session at the Maritime School or other appropriate venue during the morning. For the practical training in the afternoon, guided and supervised training in deep water conditions will be provided.

Students will be introduced to a range of emergencies and will receive detailed instruction on survival techniques.

Who is this course for?
For those who are training to work in the Marine Industry or those seeking employment to work in any capacity on board a sea going vessel.

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Medically fit and healthy – a medical form will be required

  • Helicopter assistance
  • Donning a life jacket
  • Use of an immersion suit
  • Jump safely from height into water
  • Right an inverted life raft whilst wearing a life jacket
  • Swim wearing a life jacket
  • Keep afloat without a life jacket
  • Board a survival craft
  • Operate survival craft equipment
  • Operate location devices
  • Initial actions when boarding a survival craft to increase chance of survival

Assessment & certification
Continuous practical assessment and final scenario exercise with full active debrief of exercise. All delegates successfully completing the course will be awarded STCW95 Regulation VI/1 and Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code and element 6.4 of unit M6 of the Marine VQ’s certificate in Personal Survival Techniques issued by DSFRS under the authority of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
